Suspected Bandits Attack Osun Community, Kidnap Ex-Customs Officer, Kill Resident

What began as an ordinary Monday evening in Ora-Igbomina, a community in Ifedayo Local Government Area of Osun State, quickly descended into fear and confusion after armed men reportedly invaded the town, abducted a former Nigerian Customs officer, and left a resident dead under disturbing circumstances.

According to information gathered from community sources, the attackers arrived around 7:00 p.m., moving calmly but purposefully. Rather than causing chaos across the town, they reportedly made their way directly to the home of the former customs officer, raising concerns that the attack may have been premeditated.

A Calculated Ambush

Local accounts suggest the victim was on his way home when the gunmen, believed to have been waiting nearby, intercepted and forcefully took him away. The suddenness of the abduction left residents stunned, with little time to react before the assailants disappeared into surrounding farmlands.

As they fled through the Akisa axis, tragedy reportedly followed. A farmer who was working late on his farmland—using a headlamp to see in the dark—was said to have crossed paths with the fleeing gunmen. Moments later, he was allegedly shot.

In one of the most heartbreaking details of the incident, the farmer’s 10-year-old son, who was with him at the time, managed to escape and ran into the town to raise the alarm.

Security Forces Swing Into Action

Community leaders quickly alerted security agencies. Confirming the development, the Osun State Police Command said it received a report of a kidnapping in the area. The police spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed that the Divisional Police Officer had visited the victim’s residence to obtain firsthand information.

While police have confirmed the abduction, they noted that the report of a killing is still undergoing verification.

“Once the information reached us, tactical teams were immediately deployed,” Ojelabi said.
“With support from forest guards, local vigilantes, and other security personnel, our officers are combing the bushes to rescue the victim.”

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered the deployment of additional tactical units, and investigations are ongoing as security forces trail the suspects.

Growing Fears and Calls for Action

Community leaders and residents have expressed deep concern over the attack, describing it as a grim reminder of growing insecurity in border communities. Ora-Igbomina’s closeness to Ekiti and Kwara States, they say, makes it vulnerable to criminal infiltration.

Calls are now mounting for stronger security presence, improved surveillance, and coordinated inter-state policing to prevent further incidents.

As the search continues and residents await updates, one question remains heavy in the air: How safe are rural communities becoming?
