Advancements in technology are playing a crucial role in improving the lives of women dealing with fibroids, a non-cancerous growth in the uterus that can cause various symptoms. With over 70% of women under 50 at risk of developing fibroids, innovative treatments are making a significant impact.

Traditional surgical methods for fibroid removal can be risky and may result in complications, including blood loss and scarring. However, a non-invasive treatment known as High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is proving to be a game-changer. HIFU uses sound waves to target specific areas of a fibroid, heating and destroying the tissue without harming surrounding healthy areas.

Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, the medical director of Nordica Fibroid Care Centre, introduced HIFU to Nigeria as a safer alternative to surgery. Since its introduction, over 324 women in Nigeria have undergone fibroid removal using HIFU between July 2021 and July 2023.

HIFU offers several advantages, including shorter recovery times, no risk of blood loss, preservation of fertility, and the ability to return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. Unlike surgical options, HIFU eliminates the need for general anesthesia and significantly reduces the risk of complications.

Dr. Ajayi aims to expand access to HIFU treatment across Nigeria to ensure that more women can benefit from this technology. The success of HIFU highlights the potential for technology to transform healthcare and improve the quality of life for individuals facing medical challenges.
