The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has raised concerns that the removal of fuel subsidy without adequate measures to mitigate the effects is pushing Nigeria towards collapse. The CBCN’s President, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, expressed worry over the current economic crisis facing the nation and its citizens. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has urged the government to address the economic pains arising from the subsidy removal to prevent any strike or mass protest that could lead to a breakdown of law and order, further exacerbating the unemployment rate and poverty in the country. NECA called for transparent communication and the building of national consensus during this difficult time.
