The Abia State Government in Nigeria has identified 2,300 ghost names on its payroll, resulting in significant savings of over N200 million on monthly wage bills. The savings were made possible through the implementation of a unified payment system. The State Accountant General, Njum Onyemenam, announced the progress during a meeting with Governor Dr. Alex Otti. The ongoing verification exercise aims to identify and remove fraudulent entries from the payrolls of state workers, local government employees, and pensioners. Onyemenam stated that the government expects to make further savings as the exercise continues. The government has already cleared the arrears of April salaries and paid June pensions to retirees in compliance with Governor Otti’s directives. Local government staff, who had missed out on their June salaries due to failure to submit their verified payment schedule, will receive their salaries this week.
